Area Gerunds (-ing forms) and Infinitives (to + verb) How
to respond... In English, many verbs and adjectives are followed
by an -ing form (quit smoking, die fighting, look forward to seeing, etc),
while others are followed by an infinitive form (to queue to get in, to be
told to shut up, to want to get married, ready to go etc). Some verbs can
take both a gerund and an infinitive form. In many cases, there is very little
difference between the two. Eg, -
I love to walk along the beach at night - I love walking along the beach at
night. However,
in some cases, there is a change in meaning. Eg,
- I remember locking the door behind me - I remembered
to lock the door behind me. Students
need to be aware of these differences. The student in this case is apparently
not.
