Area Conditional Sentences How
to respond... In English, most sentences which contain a clause
beginning with If are known as 'Conditional' sentences. A Conditional sentence
normally has two parts: an If-clause, and a subordinate clause, which invariably
contains a modal auxiliary verb (would, will, might, could, etc). If
something happens, something else will happen (If you scratch my car, I'll
kill you!). In
English, conditional sentences do not normally take a modal auxiliary verb in
the If-clause. But many languages do. In the above example, the student is probably
translating directly from his/her own language and is unaware of the conventions
surrounding conditional sentences in English. |
