The craftsmanship of custom medals
Medals are a testament to the superior winners of the various
competitions. We customize the shape, pattern and style you want,
then it can be divided into sports medals and commemorative medals
according to the use.
The process of custom medals making as follow:
1. Artworking making.
With the popularization of computer technology, computer drawing
replaced the previous manual drawing.
2. Mold making.
The designed drawings are imported into the carving software for 3D
modeling or editing. After that, we carve on the mold by machine.
The thickness of the carving knife should vary with the thickness
of the lines in the drawing. Comparing with the artwork, we can
check if the mold is correct and if the lines of the design are
continuous on the mold.
Digging on the mold in order to let the raw material flowed into
the mold. The quantites and size of the rabbet depended on the
shape of medal. By doing this, it improves the products smoothness
and very good help for controlling the reject ratio.
Put the mold into the machine tool of electrical discharge
machining. Adjust the size of the copper plate according to the
size of the part of sand effect requested by customer. And adjust
the current to control the size of the sand.
5. Mold polishing
In the process of engraving the mold, there will be some traces of
the carving knife leaving on the surface of the mold and needless
sandblasted as well. We will use 220# oilstone, 350# oilstone, 450#
oilsone and 600# oilstone to polish the mold step by step first,
and then polish the smaller corners and letters with fiber. The
edge will be polished as well.
6. Mold heat treatment
High temperature treatment of the mold in order to improve the
hardness of the mold, go through 900 degrees of heat for 2 hours
and then turn back again with 300 degrees for 5 hours. In this way
we can avoid mold deformation or collapse caused by the not enough
hardness of the mold.
7. Mold polishing again
There will be oxide layer caused by heat treatment for the mold, so
polish the mold again.
8. Die cast
The die machine should be suitable to the products. Too large
products with small machines will lead to the product line and
pattern not full enougn. Put the mold on the machine and adjust the
position of the front mold and the back mold to reach the
consistency. Adjust the pressure of the machine as well in order to
make full products. We will check samples first before mass
production. If all is ok, we will let the machine work
automatically in high efficiency.
9. Edge grinding
Grinding the rough edge by file or sander.
10. Products Polishing
Polishing the edge and the surface of the frontside and backside of
the products to make it smooth.
Firstly clean the surface of the products after polishing.
Secondly, plate the background in copper color. Then we can plate
any colors requested by order. Such as shiny gold/ silver/ copper,
antique gold/ silver/ copper, matt gold/ silver/ copper, limitation
gold, spray black// blue/ white and so on. Finally, cover the
products with oil and baking for 2 hours in the oven in order to
protect the electroplated coatings from oxidation.
12. Quality control for plating
Take off the bad products which have bubble, watermark on the
surface. And take off the one that is off color as well.
13. Color filling
We fill the enamel color according to Pantone Solid Coated.
Selectting a suitable cylinder to fill colors according to the
input area size. Need to be very careful to avoid spill or color
changing. After that, we clean the surface of the products since
there will be a few colors spill onto the surface unneeded.
After color filling, we need to put the products into the oven to
strengthen the color fastness.
15. Attachment installing
Installing the attachment to the products. Like ribbon ( sublimated
ribbon, plain ribbon and printed ribbon), rope and chain, ect.
