Trinity
- Spoken English Exams
|
|
What |
|
The
Trinity Spoken English exams are a series of 'real-world' oral exams
which assess the candidate's general conversation and their ability
to discuss a prepared topic. The exams are divided into 12 different
grades ranging from True Beginner to near-native speaker fluency.
Such an extensive range of grades means that learners can sit for
an exam which is truly commensurate with their level of English.
Unlike many ESL/EFL exams, the Trinity Spoken English exams allow
a great deal of flexibility in the way they can be delivered. In many
instances, they are used in conjunction with a school's own syllabus,
rather than in opposition to it. For example, in Italy, they are used
to complement the State English exams.
The exams are also unique in that, from Grade 4 upwards, students
can decide in advance the topic which they wish to talk about during
the exam. As they progress through the grades, a new task is added
at each stage. The Trinity College Introductory Grades (Grades 1 to
3) are suitable mostly for children from 7 years of age, while Grades
4-12 are suitable for all ages.
Candidates generally receive their results the following day, though
certificates are not normally issued until 6-8 weeks after the exam.
The grades awarded are linked to the Council of Europe's framework
for languages. |
|
Why |
|
The Trinity Spoken English exams are internationally recognized. Over
30 UK universities and Colleges of Higher Education recognize Trinity
Grade 10 in Spoken English as the entry level of English for undergraduate
study. Grade 8, on the other hand, is considered the level at which
candidates will be able to use their English at work for standard
functions and exchanges.
The exams provide
an official recognition of a student's level of spoken English. |
