What |
|
The
Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) measures the
level of English of non-native speakers who need English for work.
Because it is designed for people from any work environment and requires
no specialist knowledge, its application is truly global - a fact
attested to by the sheer number of corporate recruitment units worldwide
which recognize it, and by the 2 million non-native speakers of English
who take the exam each year.
The test is a 2-hour 'paper-and-pencil' multiple-choice test comprising
200 questions. It is split into two independently-timed sections:
Listening
100 questions
delivered by audio-cassette
4 separate sections
Candidates listen
to a selection of statements and short conversations, then answer
questions based on the listening segments.
Reading
100 questions
presented in written format
3 separate sections
Candidates attempt
a variety of written tasks, such as incomplete sentences, error recognition
and reading comprehension.
Sub-scores from 5-495 are awarded for each section of the TOEIC test,
translating into a total score of 990.
TOEIC is not a pass/fail exam. |
|
Why |
|
Students take the TOEIC test because it serves as an international
official recognition of their level of English.
Employers use
TOEIC to gauge whether a job candidate is sufficiently competent in
English to perform a particular role in the workplace.
Many
English language departments and institutions use TOEIC as an easily-administered
(and affordable) placement and progress tool.
More and more
colleges and universities are now asking their students to take the
TOEIC test prior to graduation. |
|
Who |
|
The TOEIC test was developed in the USA in 1979 by Educational Testing
Service (ETS®), at the request of the Ministry of International
Trade & Industry in Japan. It is now administered by the Chauncy
Group International®, a subsidiary of ETS.
Non-native speakers
of English from all over the world can take the TOEIC test, provided
they can access a local TOEIC testing center. |
|
When |
|
The
TOEIC test is available all year round. |
|
Where |
|
Students
can take the TOEIC test at any of the hundreds of designated TOEIC
test centers around the world. |
|
How |
