What |
|
The Test of
English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is arguably the most widely
used international English language test in the world. It is taken
by hundreds of thousands of non-native speakers of English every
year.
In July 1998, the TOEFL test was changed from a 'paper-and-pencil'
based test to a computer-based test (CBT). Although there are still
a few countries where you must still take a paper-and-pencil TOEFL
test, most countries now administer the TOEFL test exclusively by
computer.
The TOEFL test consists of 3 sections:
Listening
Structure/Writing
Reading
TOEFL has a separate spoken test - Test of
Spoken English (TSE) - which is administered independently from
the computer-based TOEFL test.
CBT TOEFL scores range from 40 to 300, with most English-medium
universities requiring a TOEFL score of 213 or higher as an entry
requirement.
TOEFL is not a pass/fail exam.
|
|
Why |
|
A TOEFL score is required by over 2,400 universities and colleges
in North America as an entry requirement for non-native speakers of
English. More and more universities in the rest of the English-speaking
world are also accepting TOEFL as an official measure of a student's
level of English.
Students take
the TOEFL test because it gives them a very portable official recognition
of their level of English. It can also be used as a measure of their
progress in English. |
|
Who |
|
The TOEFL test was developed in the USA by Educational Testing Service
(ETS®), who are responsible for a number of other mainstream exams
such as TOEIC, TSE, TWE, SAT, GMAT and GRE.
Non-native speakers
of English from all over the world can take the TOEFL test, provided
they can access a local TOEFL testing center. |
|
When |
|
The
TOEFL test is available all year round, usually at least once a month.
NB: Students must wait 1 month before re-sitting the TOEFL test. |
|
Where |
|
The
TOEFL test is administered at designated TOEFL test centers around
the world. |
|
How |
|
Prospective TOEFL candidates should contact the closest Regional
TOEFL Registration Center. Exam fees (approximately US$100) are
payable on registration.
Results from
the Listening and Reading sections of the TOEFL test are displayed
on the computer screen immediately after the test. Final official
TOEFL scores (which include the Structure & Writing sections)
are generally issued 4 weeks later.
