MELAB
|
|
What |
|
The
Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) assesses Advanced
level English language competence of adult non-native speakers of
English, in a similar way to TOEFL and IELTS.
The test was developed to evaluate the levels of English of students
applying to North American English-medium universities and colleges.
It comprises 3 compulsory sections and one optional (speaking) component,
which is required for applicants intending to study at the University
of Michigan, and for candidates seeking certification by the International
Commission on Healthcare Professionals (ICHP). The test is allocated
as follows:
1. Written Composition (30 mins)
2. Listening Comprehension (25 mins)
3. Multiple choice - grammar, reading, vocab (75 mins)
4. Speaking test (optional, and only available at certain test
sites in the USA and Canada).
The MELAB is not a pass/fail exam. Institutions which recognize the
MELAB will stipulate a minimum acceptable score (normally between
75-85).
Speaking test scores are considered valid for a maximum period of
2 years. Score reports are issued approximately 4-6 weeks after the
test. |
|
Why |
|
A significant number of educational institutions in North America
recognize the MELAB as an alternative to the TOEFL test as evidence
of English language proficiency.
Many professional
institutions stipulate the MELAB for non-native speaking employees
needing English for work or training purposes.
The MELAB provides
a useful 'general assessment' of a learner's English language proficiency.
This assessment can later be used for educational or employment opportunities. |

MELAB is only administered by the English Language Institute at the
