Michigan - ECCE / ECPE

What

The Michigan Examination for the Certificate of Competency in English (ECCE) and the Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English (ECPE) are American-English exams which are taken by a significant number of non-native speakers of English each year.

Examination for the Certificate of Competency in English (ECCE)
Aimed at learners with at least an Intermediate level of English
4 separate sections: Listening; Grammar, Vocab & Reading; Writing; Speaking
Assesses the candidate's level of 'General' - rather than 'Academic' - English.
Candidates must obtain a 'Low Pass' on all 4 sections to be awarded the ECCE certificate.

Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English (ECPE)
Aimed at learners with at least an Advanced level of English in the 4 main skills
5 separate sections: Writing; Cloze; Listening; Grammar, Vocabulary & Reading; Interactive Oral Communication
Candidates must obtain a 'Pass' on all 5 sections to be awarded the ECPE certificate.
An ECPE Preliminary Test, which familiarizes candidates with the format of the ECPE exam is available - and often obligatory - in certain countries.

The ECCE and ECPE exams are Pass/Fail exams. Final results are reported a few months after the exam. Possible results are: Honors/Pass/Fail. Scores on individual sections are not reported. For a small fee, ECCE and ECPE scores can be converted to the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) scale.
