Lonely
Planet Australian Phrasebook (2nd Ed)
Socializing, sport, travel
and just about every situation comes with its own jargon in
Australia. You can’t hope to appreciate a true Ozzie barbie
unless you know the meaning of ‘snag’, ‘schooie’ and ‘stubbie’,
just as you’ll never appreciate the Australian beach without
a grasp on ‘Noahs’, ‘Eskies’ and ‘Sluggoes’. This humorous
- but highly informative – guide provides the key to one of
the world’s most endearing vernaculars: Ozzie-English. Don’t
head Down Under without it.

In
a Sunburned Country
Another Bill Bryson classic,
which will appeal to just about anyone heading Down Under
to teach English and/or travel around this vast land. Bryson's
particular brand of humour seems very much at home in a country
where A-bombs go off unnoticed, prime ministers disappear
into the surf, and cheery citizens coexist with the world's
deadliest creatures: toxic caterpillars, aggressive seashells,
crocodiles, sharks, snakes, and the deadliest of them all,
the dreaded box jellyfish. And that's just the beginning.
Great reading for Australians and foreigners alike.
