The
Structure of English - Studies in Form and Function for
Language Teaching
Designed
for graduate TESOL and certificate programs, as well as the
new ESL/EFL teacher, The Structure of English presents
a descriptive approach to grammar and the structure of English.
Places a paricular focus on function - grammatical and discourse
- as opposed to form (although form is addressed too). This
characteristic reflects the philosophy that an understanding
of discourse functions better enables teachers to see what's
behind the grammar so that they can then teach it effectively
to their students. Instead of exercises composed of unrelated
sentences to present major points of grammar, the book illustrates
structures with rich, "real world" contexts excerpted
from literature (mostly American): novels, short stories,
poems, essays, and drama. Exercises in the companion
workbook are also based on naturally occurring stretches
of discourse. An excellent resource.
